Élan for Elegant Evenings

I was being really good about my resolution so I also joined a singles outfit, holding what were grandly described as parties for professional people. Some nice venues, places I wanted to go to, though with a pretty huge mark up when you looked at the cost of the set menu. It was run by a disreputable looking Jewish guy. He didn't look the part at all. Scruffy with a huge paunch. One compensation he did have a good line in gossip.
He knew quite a lot of B list celebs who were feted with cringing sycophancy if they turned up to any of our soirees. Over the hill footballers and singers with Polyfilla faces that were totally immobile, they had been on the receiving end of so much Botox. Most of the men seemed to be fairly comfortably off and there were even some in the younger bracket. Nearly all were property developers or car salemen.  And their line in chat was interrupted by too many other lines which were interesting them at the same time and which led to rather too many trips to the bathroom as well as much raucous laughter. The most exciting offer I got was ‘Do you fancy a weekend in Milton Keynes?’ The more exclusive venues were interspersed with ‘cheaper alternatives’. Pie and mash and as many unpalatable drinks as you want for £49 anyone? The cheaper venues also had the benefit of widening the clientele. One or two of them looked as if they could do with a good wash. I’m still working on the resolutions for 2012.
